I think a lot of things, Ol Skool, but have to be careful not to be too political here. This thread skirts the line already and I appreciate the mods allowing it.

I am not sure, Ol Skool, what folk will think. They will be far removed from that era, so who knows. I know I won't be here then.

Can't disagree with you MeanJoe. Reagan comes the closest with stuff like "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" But Ronny is a distant 2nd. Clinton 3rd. LBJ, Nixon, Ford, Carter, the Bushes, Obama. Meh. Wasn't alive for Ike.

Another thing about JFK - his sense of humor. Dude was a comedian. "The man who accompanied Jacqueline Kennedy to Paris." "Everyone's asking what Jackie's wearing. No one wonders what Lyndon and I wear."

MeanJoe, if you ever get up to Boston, you'll have to go to the JFK Library. They've done a fine job with it since it opened in 1980.

I think ABC produced an incredible 2 hour special debunking the conspiracy - really made Oliver Stone and all of the conspiracy people look like idiots.

I think so Suwanee. I used to think differently, but no more. I mentioned the ABC special on page 1 of this thread, but took a little flak from B2B on it later on.

Ike was one of the greatest Americans of anytime, STD. I hear you about his last speech which I've heard countless times.

Agree with the part about Ike. About no conspiracy, I'm not sold. This has kind of gone back and forth historically since that fateful day in November 1963. At times most people believed the Warren Commission, at other times, most people distrusted it. It seems to have swung to the side of believing it now. I really find it difficult to believe, but how much of that is passion and how much reason. I think a little of both.

You do have to wonder if it's all cut and dried, why not have all the documents released long before now. Something seems amiss with that. I do believe it was a conspiracy, based upon many things I've read and discussed with folks, but I can understand it if you believe the opposite, because nothing is really proven one way or the other, and the more distant we get from that time, the less evidence is possible to gather. I am afraid that the truth might be scarier than anyone (or most anyone) posits or believes. I could very well be wrong. Just a hunch.

About Ike, I agree, he was a great president. His term was relatively calm, but he inspired a lot of confidence. I was pretty young during his term, so my view of him might be skewed, but of all the Presidents in my lifetime, I only really liked JFK and Ike. Ike's final speech really does lay it out, and he pretty much pulled no punches. Great American, one of the greatest of all time, IMO.

I will never forget the moment, the second, that we heard that our President had been shot. Our boss was paralyzed, but he eventually shut the office down. We heard it, I couldn't believe it, I was in shock. I just walked out and walked....a long way. I couldn't go home. I didn't know what to do. I didn't know if we were going to be bombed to kingdom come any second. This was the height of the cold war, for the youngsters in our midst. Then later...we heard the grim news. I never really fully recovered from that. To me, this was scarier than 9/11, even though that had a grip on me as well. I think the difference, in retrospect, was the lack of 24/7 news coverage back then. We just were left to speculate on our own, ruminate on our own, and didn't know what the fuck was going on. Then Ruby was shot right on TV. It was a fucking scary time. I'll never forget it, it sticks with me to my grave.
